Church of the Ascension ACW (Annual Report for 2007) At our Annual Meeting in January, we reported that a large collection of knitted items – mittens, hats, scarves, and socks – had been sent to the Hampton Food Basket, along with a financial donation of $120. We also made a commitment to the Diocesan ACW plus donations to other Diocesan organizations. We donated $400 for the tuition of our sponsored student, Ronald, at Bishop McAllister School in Uganda, as well as money for his birthday in August and for some spending money. We also made donations to both Camps Medley and Brookwood and to the Church Army. In February, we purchased new chairs for the Church Basement which have proved to be most comfortable and a big improvement over the old ones. We also purchased new tablecloths for the basement. Members attended the World Day of Prayer Service on 2 March, and Ann Longthorp was one of the readers at that service. At the March meeting, the date of 6 June was chosen for our Annual Pot Luck Supper and Auction. Again this year, we decided that the money raised would go to the Camps Project “Building Faith for a Lifetime.” Several members attended the ACW Annual Meeting at Christ Church (Parish) Church in Fredericton at the beginning of May and enjoyed their time there. The money raised from the various collections at the meeting was split between the work of the guest speaker, Isabel Murphy, a Wycliffe Bible translator and Paul Jefferies at Bishop McAllister School in Uganda. It was decided that we would end our year with lunch at Holly’s on May 15. Our Parish Ladies’ Shared Meal and Auction in early June was again a success and realized a total of $592. We augmented this amount and sent $600 to Peter Irish, Chair of the Camps Committee. Thanks to all the women of the Parish who attended and helped support this worthy cause by bidding and buying at the Auction. In September, we decided that because there were now so many services at 9 o’clock, we would hold our Coffee and Muffin hour only once a month, and the decision as to on which Sunday this would take place would be made either at quilting or by telephone. At this meeting, we discussed the colours for the painting of the interior of the church, and the heritage colours chosen look very nice. At the end of September, Ann Longthorp attended and reported on the ACW Kingston/Kennebecasis Deanery Meeting. Our Rev’d Marian was the guest speaker and spoke about her work in South Africa on an AIDS project. Also at this meeting, plans were finalized for the Craft Sale and Luncheon to be held on 20 October. Our Craft Sale and Luncheon raised $831.55 and was enjoyed by the community at large as well as by members of the congregation. In October, we voted to give $400 to the Building Fund in order to help offset the cost of the painting of the church interior. The date 12 December was set for the Christmas Pot Luck at the Norton Shore Hall. Our Dorcas reported in November that, as there were eight quilts on the list, we would not take requests for any further quilts this year. At the November meeting, plans were finalized for Christmas gifts and calendars, for donations to the Food Basket and for the Christmas party. Our financial picture at the end of November looked good, and we feel we will be able to meet all our commitments when we hold our Annual Meeting in January. Because of the Christmas party, we did not have a meeting in December. The Christmas party was held December 12, and our special guest was Rev’d Robert LeBlanc and his wife Rev’d Bonnie LeBlanc. As she does each year, Irene MacMackin read the Christmas story from St. Luke’s Gospel, an annual tradition which signals the beginning of the Christmas season for many members. Gifts were exchanged among members and, with the help of the Leblanc's, favourite carols were sung. During the year, we continued to send a variety of cards to our members and church families for illness, bereavement, anniversaries, and special birthdays. We form the Altar Guild for the Church of the Ascension and keep the church and the church basement in excellent shape and the weekly floral arrangements, often from members’ gardens, add much to our services. Gifts for baptism, confirmation, and graduation are also provided by the ACW as are candles and other supplies for the church. We would like to thank the members of the congregation who contributed to the new chairs for the basement this year. Our outreach program of the Coffee Hour after our chosen 9 am service continues to be very popular. Members take turns making the muffins, and special thanks go to Susan Nelson who makes the coffee for us. We also will continue to visit our shut-in members and those in hospital and others in our local community who may need our care or help. Our work within our church, our community, and the wider world will continue in 2008.
